You spend a tremendous amount of time in your kitchen. Because of this, it is vital that it be functional and inviting and that you feel great preparing meals as well as entertaining friends and family. If you are like the majority of folks, you are most likely waiting for the finances to completely renovate and create the kitchen of your dreams.
The good news is that you can transform your kitchen without breaking the bank. There are strategies and ways of making specific changes that will have a high impact, even on a tight budget.
The first thing to consider when renovating on a budget is recycling what you already own. Factors that cause a kitchen improvement project to skyrocket in price are purchasing new cabinetry and reconfiguring the floor plan with the plumbing and electrical work that follows. All this also requires a new floor because the old one no longer matches the new set-up, etc.
The second thing to consider is improving your kitchen in well planned phases…doing a little each year. Here are a few simple ideas to give your kitchen a face lift that will cost you far less than doing an entire kitchen renovation.
1. Paint out your old kitchen cupboards
This will require some effort on your part, but you are perfectly able to accomplish this. The secret in cutting down on the time is to use Chalk Paint because there is hardly any surface preparation with this product apart from a light sanding.Chalk paint covers and adheres easily to wood, even if the surface is varnished. As a final finishing touch, add a coating of wax.
2. Cover your old floor with a new area rug
3. Recycle an old cherished piece of furniture
4. Replace your counter
If your budget is too tight for a granite or marble counter (costing on average $100.00/sq. foot) then Quartz or Corian are great cost-effective alternatives ($50 – $80.00/sq. foot)
If you want to save even more, consider the new generation of modern laminates such as Formica. They are as beautiful as they are durable and go for between $25 – $50/sq. foot. They are also easy to install.
Designer trick : To make a laminate counter look high end, invest in a great looking high-quality backsplash tile.
5. Install backsplash tiles with a lot of personality
An outstanding wall tile gives any kitchen a lot of style. I often recommend that clients change up their backsplash, and add a coat of paint to the walls because if they do just that, the entire kitchen will feel like it was renovated. For high impact, choose textured relief tiles and add lighting so the surface comes to life. I believe that the kitchen backsplash is like completing an outfit with a great necklace or neck-tie. A new backsplash adds a wonderful finishing touch to a kitchen and stands out like a jewel. 6. Replace the lighting
Suspended lighting is both functional and makes a big style statement. Adequate kitchen lighting is vital and should be positioned over your dining table, kitchen island as well as over your sink.Remember to properly light specific work zones so you can perform your tasks with comfortable lighting; the cooking area as well as clean up and food preparation areas.

7. Change the door and drawer handles
Choose handles that are harmonized with your general kitchen style. You have a traditional or country kitchen? Perhaps a brass or pewter handle would be a nice match. Your cupboard doors are Shaker Style? Why don’t you try a sleek and elongated handle that emphasizes the timeless style of your kitchen.
8. Inject some colour with new decorative accessories
Even just one of these budget-friendly ideas can transform your kitchen. As you can see, you don’t have to renovate your entire kitchen to have what feels like a new one that fits with your personal style.

Rustic style kitchens
Part of the appeal of natural materials is their imperfections, so rather than hide their flaws, make the material the focal point of your design for a bold statement.
Unusual metals, such as brass, copper and pewter, and utilitarian materials, such as exposed pipes, poured concrete, bricks and wood really create an old-world style.
White and cream kitchens
Dramatic lighting and beautiful wood floors
Multi-level counters with a mix of finishes
Bleached natural wood
Rich with history and beautifully aged and weathered, raw bleached wood adds a clean yet rustic style to your kitchen. Wood trends for 2016 are still textured, but slightly more refined with lighter tones available in a variety neutral warm grays.
Step 1: Recruit help!
If you are single, go ahead and propose an exchange with buddies who also have the same objective. One week-end the team is at one person’s home and the next week-end at another’s, and so on and so forth. With this type of team rotation there is a momentum and more discipline to stick to the plan.
Step 2: Establish a schedule with a final date.
Step 3. Prepare the evacuation
Step 4: Clarify the purpose of each room!
Some questions to consider: Have I used this item in the last year? Will this object contribute to a definite future project of mine? Do I need to consider letting go of certain unfinished projects?
According to the Pareto Principle, we use only 20% of our belongings 80% of the time, so it is highly probable that you will be left with items that should outright leave the premises.
Step 5: Cultivate the habit of handling an object only once.
Rather than transferring items from one pile to another and procrastinating in their inevitable treatment, develop the habit of immediately managing your documents and all other objects that accumulated into clutter. For example, upon arriving, open your mail and address each document; bills get placed in the ‘bills to pay’ file, envelopes and garbage go into the recycle bin, and other papers are immediately archived in an appropriate file for easy access and future retrieval.
Truly processing your mail every time you bring it in can take 5 minutes, but at least you banish clutter, disorderly piles and the endless searching of important documents. Managing your finances and paying your bills on time become much simpler when everything is in its place and on hand…bonus!
Admittedly, we have trouble getting the job done because it simply isn’t enjoyable. One of the goals of this article was to offer you a small source of inspiration and a few strategies that have made a difference with my clients as well as in my own clutter.
Having said that, more and more individuals are consulting professional organizers either for the development of personalized storage solutions, or to receive help in the actual execution of certain tasks. According to them, the benefit of working with a pro far out ways the costs, and provides enough motivation and expertise to make a noticeable difference. Getting organized once and for all contributes to your quality of life, so don’t wait any longer!
